Looking for a delicious treat to sweeten your Passover celebration? Look no further than this irresistible chocolate caramel matzah—often lovingly referred to as Matzah Crack. A delightful combination of crispy matzah, rich toffee, melted chocolate, and a variety of toppings, this dessert has become a beloved holiday staple in many homes.

We’ve partnered with the wonderful Marta Wiseman (@wiseeats) to bring you this delicious take on a Passover classic. While the classic version is topped simply with chocolate chips and a sprinkle of flaky Maldon sea salt, there’s no limit to how creative you can get with it. Toasted almonds, shredded coconut, colourful sprinkles, or even a handful of crushed potato chips can add exciting layers of flavour and texture. One popular variation features toasted almonds for a nutty crunch that perfectly balances the sweetness of the caramel and chocolate.

Fair warning: it’s seriously addictive. You might want to double the batch!

Ingredients:

  • 6 unsalted matzahs
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1¼ cups semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips, chopped
  • ¼ cup slivered almonds
  • 2 tbsp shredded coconut
  • Sprinkles (optional)
  • Flaky sea salt (such as Maldon)

Instructions:

  1. Prep your pan: Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and place parchment paper on top. Arrange matzah in a single layer to cover the tray.
  2. Make the toffee: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar, and a pinch of sea salt. Whisk until it begins to boil (about 2–4 minutes), then continue boiling for 3 more minutes until thickened.
  3. Spread the toffee: Pour the hot mixture evenly over the matzah and quickly spread it with a spatula.
  4. Bake: Place the tray in the oven and immediately reduce the heat to 350°F. Bake for 15 minutes, watching carefully. If it darkens too quickly, reduce to 325°F.
  5. Add chocolate: Remove from oven, sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee, and let sit for 5 minutes. Once softened, spread the melted chocolate evenly.
  6. Toppings: While the chocolate is still warm, sprinkle with your favourite toppings—sea salt, almonds, coconut, or anything festive.
  7. Chill and serve: Freeze until set. Once firm, break into pieces or cut into squares. Store in the fridge for freshness.
